A Future Led by Passion

“Above all, be true to yourself, and if you cannot put your heart in it, take yourself out of it.” – Unknown

There are few feelings worse than not knowing what to do, feeling lost, incapable and even helpless. Wouldn’t you agree?

Now imagine how much worse that feeling is when you are in your late teens or early twenties and you believe that your career choice at that time is the one that will define the rest of your life. The pressure can be brutal on some. For others, the external and internal pressures even give way to thoughts of suicide.

When I realized through my own life that I had the power to do something regarding just about anything, I vowed to do something to help out young people so that they didn’t have to feel this way. In doing so, I believed that I could possibly change the course of humanity. Does that sound too grandiose? Usually the simplest concepts turn out to be so – remember Gandhi’s non-violent stand on protesting?

So, let’s start from the beginning regarding this idea.

Simply stated, the most success people in the world have, among possible others, one thing in common –
they are ridiculously passionate about what they do.

If being passionate is a common denominator, why don’t we pay more attention and take it into consideration in our efforts to educate our upcoming generations? Simple response – it is not as easy to measure, to quantify, discover and guide. You see, being passionate is a very individual and subjective thing. Even if two or more people are passionate about the same thing – let’s say for the sake of argument that they are passionate about music – more likely than not, their passions will point in slightly different directions. This is why we can have so many stars in one field (again, i.e. music).

If being passionate is necessary to achieve utmost success, and what we are passionate about is a very individual and personal matter, then it is safe to say that our current educational system/model is failing us entirely. In addition, it is failing our country, society and the world in general.

Don’t get me wrong, I am an advocate for the level of education that is imparted (in those schools that teaching actually takes place) in today’s schools, so I am not saying that this is obsolete or outdated. What I am saying is that they are leaving a critical component out of the educational equation – the student itself. I don’t mean this from a Montessori-like perspective, but I’m referring to guiding students through a self-discovery process that provides clarity and long-term direction.

Going back to the point of being empowered to do something about most anything, I figured, if the system is not taking the student into consideration – and most likely never will due to the high costs associated with a proposal such as this (from re-training all teaching professionals, to modifying curriculums, etc.) – then it was my responsibility to study the situation, research the state of the matter in detail, and create something that would help youth find this purpose or passion and guide them within the system so that they can maximize the results that they can achieve.

And so The Passionate Future Project was created! What is it, you ask? It is a program to help people find their passion, their calling, their better chance at success. But let’s go for the truly important stuff – let’s take a look at what it can achieve.

The Passionate Future Project conducted a pilot study where three focus groups participated in the entire program and then were surveyed in three key areas – personal clarity (“what are my strengths and passions”), clarity of choice (goals, dreams), and clarity on how to get there (milestones, roadmap). Each group was comprised of ten (10) participants. The age range of participants in these groups was from 15 to 18 years, with 16 being the mean year of age. Out of the 30 total participants, 62% were female.

When surveyed, participants reported an average 70.66% increase in clarity of what their strengths are. These same groups reported an average 83.66% increase in clarity of what they wanted to do when they graduated high school. Lastly, participants in these pilot groups reported having a better idea on what to do in order to achieve their goals – an average of 87.33%.

What will be interesting is to follow these students and see what they are able to achieve in their lives, but imagine the possibilities.

This is our dream… a world led in all areas by people that are truly passionate about what they do and in doing so, achieving a world full of ridiculously successful people.
